Introduction

COVID-19. An infamous word that has brought loss and suffering to many in the world recently. In this blog, I would like to address specifically how the virus has affected people like me, specifically students at the collegiate level looking to go to professional school. To introduce myself, I am Owen Becker a Sophomore at the University of Kentucky class of 2023 Studying Medical Laboratory Science on a Pre-Med track. I am an 18-year-old white male and grew up in a town just outside of Ann Arbor Michigan. Since I was young the healthcare field has been of interest to me so have constantly pursued that. Now, my perspective on how COVID-19 has effected me may be different than most. For me, I have not known anyone who has had COVID let alone died from it. However, the effects of the virus still hit me. It has taken opportunities from me as it did for many people looking to go to professional school, whether it be Medical school or Law school. For pre-professional students exploring the field through shadowing is one of the most valuable ways you can explore the field you are interested in and gain valuable experience professional programs look for. For my fellow Pre-Med students this comes in the form of internships and shadowing and although this may not be life or death, it is our futures. This has thus effected me personally by taking multiple shadowing opportunities as well as volunteering and work which would provide me with an instrumental amount of experience and insight to help my professional school endeavors. To wrap up, my experience with COVID has not been near as severe as others it has still hurt me, my friends, and my family in different ways than just physical health.
